Robbery/Assault Suspect in Custody

Thursday, 16 March 2017

Thanks to a tip from a person who saw a news report on television, a suspect wanted in the assault and robbery of a Corryton man is in custody.  Jeffrey Eric Smiddy, 38, was arrested Thursday at a residence off East Ash Street in La Follette on an aggravated robbery warrant.  More charges are pending.  The incident occurred on March 14 when 65 year old Robert McCowan came home to find the suspect inside his house on Shelton Road.  The suspect hit him over the head with a pipe and stole several items and then got away in McCowan’s car.  McCowan was taken to a hospital for treatment of head wounds.

Media reports describing McCowan’s silver Nissan Altima prompted a citizen to recognize the vehicle and report it to the La Follette Police Department.  A police officer there spotted the victim’s car as it was being driven but lost sight of it.  The Campbell County Sheriff’s Office later found the car near the residence where Smiddy was arrested.   The Knox County Sheriff’s Office Major Crimes Unit is continuing the investigation and has recovered all of the stolen items.  KCSO thanks the Campbell County Sheriff’s Office and the La Follette Police Department for their assistance.
