Two men are behind bars today after running from a traffic stop and leading officers on a short pursuit.  Danny Chavis, 51, of Lenoir City, is charged with reckless endangerment; reckless driving; aggravated assault; resisting stop, arrest, and search; manufacture, deliver, sale, possession with intent -- methamphetamine; failure to stop at a stop sign; driving while license revoked due to a conviction of DUI; and evading arrest.  His passenger, Christopher Bertram, 29, of Kingston is charged with possession of unlawful drug paraphernalia; and resisting stop, arrest, and search.  Both have criminal histories in Knox County.

The incident occurred Thursday around 3:30 when KCSO Officer Chad Gore attempted to stop Chavis after he ran a stop sign on Harry Lane Boulevard.  Chavis refused to stop his Nissan Versa and drove recklessly by driving on the wrong side of the road and speeding.  He turned onto West Kings Way and u-turned hitting Gore’s patrol car head-on.  Chavis and Bertram jumped out of the car and refused commands to stop.  Officer Gore deployed his K9 to assist with the apprehension.    The K9 bit the suspect on the left calf.  A short struggle ensued and Chavis kicked the dog in the head before being restrained.  Chavis was treated for the dog bite before going to jail.

KCSO Officer Michael Adkins approached Bertram who initially complied with commands, but then resisted until the officer subdued him.
