Warning: Phone Scams Continue

Tuesday, 05 September 2017

The Knox County Sheriff’s Office has informed the public of various phone scams circulating in Knox County during the last few years. We continue to receive reports of scams, so we want to remind the public that we do not solicit funds via the telephone.

Scammers typically call and “inform” the victims that they are collecting funds for things like missed jury duty, missed court dates, and outstanding warrants. In most of the scams, the callers request that funds be paid by purchasing a prepaid “credit” card.

Law enforcement agencies do not operate in this fashion. No matter how threatening the phone calls may sound, they are merely scams. If you receive a similar phone call, do not give the caller any money or give out any personal information. You are also urged to contact the KCSO at (865) 215-2243 at any time if you are unsure of the validity of a phone call. Do not call the number provided by the caller.
