KCSO Raids Mexican Restaurant

Wednesday, 15 November 2017

The Organized Retail Crime Unit of the Knox County Sheriff’s Office raided another business this afternoon, this time concerning EBT cards.   Ten Search warrants were served at the Taco De Mexico at 818 Beaumont Avenue.  The owner, 57 year old Jorge Lua is charged with 3 counts of identity theft, 1 count of theft, 3 counts of EBT fraud, and 3 counts of computer crimes associated with the EBT cards.

The owner was buying the food stamp cards for 50 cents on the dollar.  He then used the cards to buy food for his restaurant.  He also sold drinks at construction sites.  He made lists of the drinks he wanted and gave those to an undercover officer for her to shoplift.

The Sheriff’s office has partnered with the USDA, Kroger, and the Tennessee Department of Human Services for this investigation.

KCSO Chief of Administration, Lee Tramel, said “If you buy stolen property, EBT cards, or stolen gift cards, we are coming after you.  We are not going to stop.  These items are being sold in order to get cash to buy drugs, particularly heroin.  We’re going to continue to fight this at every single angle.”
