Officer Involved Shooting Update

Tuesday, 19 December 2017

A 58 year old man who shot and wounded a Knox County Sheriff’s Officer Monday night is charged with 2 counts of attempted first degree murder.  James Allen Hickman of 115 Noe Hill Lane will be held at the Roger D. Wilson Detention Facility under a $300,000 bond when he is released from the hospital.  The officer, 34 year old Travis Wheat, in the picture on the left, was hit in the arm and is in stable condition at U.T. Medical Center.  Wheat has been with the KCSO since 2005 and on patrol for almost 2 years.

The incident began with a call to 911 at 7 p.m. by Hickman’s wife who said that he was threatening suicide.  While she was on the phone, he fired a round from a handgun inside the house.  She told 911 that she didn’t feel safe and left the house.  Officers arrived on the scene at 7:10 and within a few minutes shots were exchanged between the suspect and 2 officers.  Hickman was struck in the shoulder and is also in stable condition at U.T. Medical Center.
