Organized Retail Crime Unit Task Force 2017

Tuesday, 02 January 2018

The numbers show that the Organized Retail Crime Unit Task Force of the Knox County Sheriff’s Office is making a difference in holiday crime at shopping centers around Knox County and especially in the Turkey Creek area.  From November 20 through December 30, 2017 task force officers arrested 433 people with various charges from shoplifting to drug charges.  Fifty-seven of those arrested were juveniles and 4 were fugitives from justice and 2 were charged with DUI. Officers recovered $96,304 of total property..  They also found 4 stolen vehicles and seized $9,640 in cash.  Drugs were also found including meth, heroin, cocaine, and marijuana.  Two guns were taken from two arrestees.

The Sheriff’s Office didn’t do this alone.  Businesses and their loss prevention people have partnered with KCSO to help make holiday shopping safer.  The task force has been in business for 6 years.  For comparison, in 2011 there were 267 arrests and $60,000 worth of property recovered.  While Turkey Creek was once a hotspot, trends now show that crime from that area is down.
