Chief Lee Tramel Talks to Media about the arrest

The Organized Theft Unit of the Knox County Sheriff’s Office arrested a North Knox County man Tuesday afternoon for trading EBT cards for cash and heroin.  James Hampton, Jr. has 21 warrants charging him with theft, selling and delivering heroin, food stamp fraud, identification theft, and computer crimes.  According to the investigation, Hampton used his Volunteer Meat and Seafood van as a front to obtain EBT cards from people then either give them half of the money on the card, while he kept the rest, or trade the cards for heroin.  There are no sales tax records or a license for the business.  Officers with warrants went to Hampton’s house located on Lake Village Circle searching for paperwork and computer evidence.  The Department of Agriculture and the Tennessee Department of Human Services are also involved in the investigation.
