School Zone Saturation Statistics

Friday, 13 April 2018

In an effort to increase awareness of the new law concerning cell phone usage in school zones, the Knox County Sheriff’s Office and the Knoxville Police Department conducted a county-wide school zone saturation this morning. The law states that those 18-years-old and older cannot use their cell phone unless it is in hands-free mode while school zone signs are flashing. Those under 18-years-old cannot use their cell phones at all while school zone signs are flashing.

During the saturation, officers wrote 108 citations for cell phone usage, one for a seat belt violation, seven for driver’s license violations, 37 for speeding, six for insurance violations, and two other for miscellaneous violations.

Statistics show a decrease in the number of crashes that have occurred in school zones since 2015. Due to increased law enforcement presence, the numbers have steadily dropped from 114 in 2015, to 99 in 2016, and to 66 in 2017. There have been 15 in 2018 so far.
