March 2018 Officer of the Month

Thursday, 10 May 2018

The Knox County Sheriff’s Office congratulates March 2018’s Officer of the Month, Jeff Monroe.

On March 6th, Officer Monroe was dispatched to a burglary in progress at an elderly woman’s home. The woman told him that everything was fine. Officer Monroe secured the residence and learned that the woman was actually a co-conspirator in a sweepstakes fraud scheme. She and others had convinced someone that she had won a sweepstakes, but needed to prepay certain expenses. Officer Monroe secured consent to search a number of items, including a portfolio, and he found $19,100 in cash. The information Officer Monroe initially gathered was critical in obtaining search warrants for the portfolio and the woman’s cell phone. While talking with the victim, Officer Monroe learned that the victim’s cell phone would only work if plugged into a power source. He instructed his probationary officer to look for a cell phone battery, which was found and used as another critical piece of evidence in the conspiracy.

Due to Officer Monroe’s diligence, the suspect was arrested, the cash was returned to the victim, and other victims were identified through the information in the suspect’s portfolio. Officer Monroe’s probationary officer also witnessed the importance of a thorough investigation.

Officer Monroe has been with the Knox County Sheriff’s Office since July 2003.
