Support Services Division (Records, LEIDSs, Teleserve)

The Support Services Division is comprised of three subdivisions:

  • Records processes all paper reports and conducts background checks for the public. 
  • The Law Enforcement Information Division processes criminal warrants and matters of NCIC
    (National Crime Information System).
  • Teleserve answers telephone calls coming into the Sheriff’s Office and make non-emergency reports.

Crash Reports

You can obtain a copy of a Crash Report at any of our three offices.  Copies can be provided for incidents occurring in Knox County ONLY.
To obtain a copy of a report:

  1. Appear in person at one of our three offices (see below) between the hours of 8:00 am and 4:30 pm Monday through Thursday or between 8:00 am and 4:00 pm on Friday .  The office is closed on holidays and weekends.
  2. Bring with you a photo ID and payment of 15 cents per page copied (cash or check).  You must provide the exact amount, as we are unable to provide change.  We do accept coins.
  3. Please allow 3 working days for our staff to produce the copy of the report.

Bring the case number with you. If you do not know the case number, provide as much specific information as you can: name(s) associated with case, date/time of occurrence, location of occurrence, nature of case (e.g., burglary, vandalism). Please also provide your day time phone number where you can be reached if there are any questions regarding your request.

Background Reports

Effective January 1, 2015: The fee for background checks will be $15.00.

There are three possible ways to obtain a background check:  in person, 3rd party or by mail.  First it is important to note that you may only obtain an official background check on yourself.  Secondly, this local background includes arrests in Knox County ONLY.
In Person:

   Obtain and complete the Release of Arrest Record form. Click here to download   (If you are unable to print the form, we can provide it to you at any of our offices or by FAX.)
   Appear in person at the City County Building between the hours of 8:00 am and 4:30 pm Monday through Thursday or between 8:00 am and 4:00 pm on Friday.  The office is closed on holidays and weekends.
   Bring with you a photo ID and payment of $10.00 (cash or check, $15.00 beginning January 1, 2015).  You must provide the exact amount, as we are unable to provide change.
   Depending on the volume of customers, the background check can be completed by our staff within 15-20 minutes.

3rd Party or By Mail:
If you are unable to appear in person, you may have a 3rd party bring the form into our office or mail us the completed form provided the Background Check form has been notarized by a notary public.  If you send the form by mail, please include the payment of $10.00 ($15.00 beginning January 1, 2015) and a self-addressed stamped envelope.

   Tuesdays and Wednesdays, 8:00 am to 11:00 am and 1:00 pm to 2:30 pm.   The office is closed on holidays and weekends.
   LOCATION:  City/County Building, Level L-1
   COST:  $25.00 for the first three (3) cards
                 $5.00 for each additional card

During the times listed above, bring a valid photo ID and blank fingerprint cards to the Records window of the Sheriff's Office on Level L-1 of the City/County Building in order to request copies of your finger prints.  You will pay for and receive a receipt for the number of fingerprint cards needed.  Cash and checks are the only accepted forms of payment.  After getting a receipt, you must then go to the Fingerprint Lab Room L305 on Level L-3 for the actual printing.
