David Amburn was born and raised in West Knox County, where he attended some of the first classes at Christian Academy of Knoxville when it opened. David later graduated from Farragut High School in 1985. In 1992, he began his career with the Knox County Sheriff’s Office as a correctional officer at the old Penal Farm.
Over the course of his career, Chief Amburn worked his way through the ranks, serving as a Corporal, Sergeant, Lieutenant, Captain, and ultimately being promoted by Sheriff Tom Spangler in 2021 to serve as Chief of Detectives.
In 1995, Chief Amburn established the Sheriff’s Office Fleet Program, which he managed until 2003. Today, in addition to his responsibilities as Chief of Detectives, he also serves as the fleet administrator, overseeing approximately 500 vehicles used by the agency.
With 34 years of service at the Knox County Sheriff’s Office, Chief Amburn brings a diverse background and extensive experience, having worked in corrections, patrol, narcotics, special investigations, property crimes, major crimes, homeland security, and fleet management.
Outside of the Sheriff’s Office, David is a devoted father of two children and a proud grandfather of five beautiful grandchildren, all of whom proudly call Knox County home.

On July 20, 1985 the burned body of Betty Joyce Brown,aka Simmons, was found in the woods at 3805 Maloney Road in South Knox County. The 29 year old Austin-East graduate had been stabbed before being burned. Ms. Brown was last seen on July 14, 1985 between midnight and 1:00am in front of the Bread Box at Magnolia Ave and Spruce Street. It is believed that Ms. Brown was offered and accepted a ride from an unknown subject. Ms. Brown’s last know address was 2737 Tarleton Ave. Initial investigation indicated that when Ms. Brown’s body was found, she had been dead approximately 1 week. Family members described Ms. Brown as being a “very sweet and loving mother.”
