The Support Services Unit provides the public with records and reports relating to the Knox County Sheriff’s Office. The unit handles local, state, and federal information relating to criminal and vehicle records, missing persons, and stolen property. In addition, Support Services provides support to all officers and employees of the department as well as area local law enforcement through accurate record keeping.

There are three possible ways to obtain a background check: in person, 3rd party or by mail. First it is important to note that you may only obtain an official background check on yourself. Secondly, this local background includes arrests in Knox County ONLY.
In Person:
Obtain and complete the Release of Arrest Record form. Click HERE to download (If you are unable to print the form, we can provide it to you at any of our offices or by FAX.)
Appear in person at the City County Building between the hours of 8:00 am and 4:30 pm Monday through Thursday or between 8:00 am and 4:00 pm on Friday. The office is closed on holidays and weekends.
Bring with you a photo ID and payment of $15.00 (cash or check). You must provide the exact amount, as we are unable to provide change.
Depending on the volume of customers, the background check can be completed by our staff within 15-20 minutes.
3rd Party or By Mail:
If you are unable to appear in person, you may have a 3rd party bring the form into our office or mail us the completed form provided the Background Check form has been notarized by a notary public. If you send the form by mail, please include the payment of $15.00 and a self-addressed stamped envelope.

Tuesdays and Wednesdays, 9:00 am to 2:00 pm. For those with limited time restraints, please contact (865)215-2564 to try to schedule a time. The office is closed on holidays and weekends.
Currently, to aid in social distancing protocols, the public are required to wear their own masks when coming for fingerprinting.

COST: $25.00 for the first three (3) cards
$5.00 for each additional card
During the times listed above, bring a valid photo ID and blank fingerprint cards to the Records window of the Sheriff’s Office on Level L-1 of the City/County Building in order to request copies of your finger prints. You will pay for and receive a receipt for the number of fingerprint cards needed. Cash and checks are the only accepted forms of payment. If paying with cash, please bring exact change. After getting a receipt, you must then go to the Fingerprint Lab Room L305 on Level L-3 for the actual printing.

On July 20, 1985 the burned body of Betty Joyce Brown,aka Simmons, was found in the woods at 3805 Maloney Road in South Knox County. The 29 year old Austin-East graduate had been stabbed before being burned. Ms. Brown was last seen on July 14, 1985 between midnight and 1:00am in front of the Bread Box at Magnolia Ave and Spruce Street. It is believed that Ms. Brown was offered and accepted a ride from an unknown subject. Ms. Brown’s last know address was 2737 Tarleton Ave. Initial investigation indicated that when Ms. Brown’s body was found, she had been dead approximately 1 week. Family members described Ms. Brown as being a “very sweet and loving mother.”
